Scott Safety to Release MERIDIAN Universal Gas Detector

Meridian, Truly Universal Gas Detector

Meridian Universal Gas Detector represents next generation fixed gas detection. In this truly universal world, you'll better protect your people, improve system reliability and operational efficiency, and lower total cost of ownership.

What Makes Meridian Truly Universal

One Detector, One Head, Multiple Sensors - No need to specify multiple detectors. Meridian's head is designed to accept Scott's standard and Rock Solid electrochemical sensors, Catalytic Bead, IR and Metal Oxide Semiconductor sensors – that can be installed without powering down the gas detector. Meridian smart electronics automatically calibrate for the type of gas detected. And the ability to integrate with new Scott sensor technologies is a future-proof solution.

Flexible Communication - Meridian will support a number of industry standard communication protocols.

Universal Accessories - From calibration adapters to flow cells to deluge guards, one set of accessories serves all applications whether toxic or combustible gas detection.

The following accessories are available for the Meridian Gas Detector:

  • Calibration Adaptor: Easily attaches to the sensor housing to deliver calibration gases to the detector head.

  • Flow Cell: Allows customers to bring a gas sample to the sensor.

  • Deluge Guard: Protects the sensor from heavy rain and harsh environments.

  • Duct Mount Kit: Easily attaches to the sensor housing to deliver calibration gases to the detector head.

  • Sensor Simulator: A useful commissioning and trouble-shooting tool that allows you to locally simulate the concentration of gases to trigger a response from the detector. Use it to verify alarm set points, relay activations, communications and other troubleshooting tasks.

Overlooking Lightning Protection Can Cost You Millions

Research shows that over 82 million barrels of oil are produced globally each calendar day. That’s hundreds of billions of dollars worth of product that must be stored, commonly in floating roof tanks, and are waiting to be shipped. Although safety is a huge priority in the oil and gas industry, the risk of lightning is often overlooked. The oil and gas industry is one of the most vulnerable industries when it comes to lightning related risks, and can be extremely costly for those facilities that do nothing to protect against the powerful natural phenomena.

As global warming progresses, the threat of lightning is expected to increase in areas that become warmer and drier. In a study conducted by the Association of British Insurers in 2007, they predict a potential increase of 50% in lightning strikes by 2050. With that comes and increase of associated risks in the oil and gas industry. One lightning strike can cost a company anywhere from $500,000 to more 40 million dollars depending on the size and type of facility. While the cost of a lightning strike can be prohibitive, protection costs a mere fraction of that. It doesn’t matter what part of the world you are in or how often lightning events happen in your area, it only takes one strike to destroy precious product.

Future-Ready ST100 Flow Meter Is SIL Compliant

ST100Process and plant engineers in search of a next-generation air/gas flow meter that is suitable for critical operations and hazardous environments will find that the future-ready ST100 Series Thermal Mass Air/Gas Flow Meter from Fluid Components International (FCI) is now rated for Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 1 compliant service.

FCI’s SIL compliance rating for the ST100 Flow Meter has been documented in a failure analysis report with FMEDA techniques by Exida, an accredited global functional safety certification company. The ST100 Flow Meter has been classified as a Type B subsystem in accordance to IEC 61508-1 with a hardware failure tolerance of 0. The Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) meets SIL-1 capability standards.

SIL ratings provide a key assurance of confidence that safety rated equipment has been tested and shown to prevent dangerous failures and to control them in the event they occur. FCI’s new SIL-1 safety compliance assures its customers that the third-party testing organization (Exida) has tested the ST100 Flow Meter and when the product is in use, the process risk is reduced to the designated level. FCI’s customers can rely on the company to improve safety and reliability continually.

The ST100 Series Flow Meter sets a new industry benchmark in process and plant air/gas flow measurement, offering the most feature-rich and function-rich electronics available. The ST100’s performance delivers unsurpassed adaptability and value to meet plant gas flow measurement applications for today and tomorrow.

Whether the need is for 4-20 mA analog, frequency/pulse, alarm relays or digital bus communications such as HART, Fieldbus, Profibus or Modbus, the ST100 is the solution. Should a plant’s needs change over time or an upgrade be desirable, the ST100 Flow Meter adapts as necessary with a plug-in card replacement that can be changed out by plant technicians in the field.

The ST100 Flow Meter’s unique graphical, multivariable, backlit LCD display/readout brings new meaning to the term "process information". It provides the industry’s most comprehensive information with continuous display of all process

measurements and alarm status, and the ability to interrogate for service diagnostics.

The user-friendly ST100 stores up to five unique calibration groups to accommodate broad flow ranges, differing mixtures of the same gas and multiple gases, and obtains up to 1000:1 turndown.

Also standard is an on-board data logger with an easily accessible, removable 2-GB micro- SD memory card capable of storing 21 million readings.

The ST100 is the first thermal flow meter to offer three different types of flow sensors to best match user applications. The fast-response FPC-style is a fast response features an integral flow conditioner and protective shroud optimized for compressed air and clean gas applications. The fast-response, general purpose FP-style features a protective shroud and is the sensor used with FCI’s VeriCal™ in-situ calibration option. For wet or dirty gases, or erratic flows, the unshrouded S-style facilitates easy cleaning and provides a smoothed response.

The comprehensive ST100 Series is comprised of two core model families: ST and STP. ST meters measure both mass flow and temperature, and the exclusive STP family adds a third parameter, pressure, making the ST100 the world’s first triple-variable thermal flow meter. Both families include single-point and dual-element models as configurations outfitted with FCI’s exclusive in-situ calibration option, VeriCal.

The ST100 can be calibrated to measure virtually any process gas, including wet gas, mixed gases and dirty gases. The basic insertion style air/gas meter features a thermal flow sensing element that measures flow from 0.25 to 1000 SFPS (0.07 NMPS to 305 NMPS) with accuracy of ±0.75 percent of reading, ±0.5 percent of full scale.

Designed for rugged industrial processes and plants, ST100 Flow Meters include service up to 850ºF (454ºC) and are available with both integral and remote (up to 1000 feet [300 meters]) electronics versions. The ST100 is agency approved for hazardous

environments, including the entire instrument, the transmitter and the rugged, NEMA 4X/IP67 rated enclosure. Instrument approvals in addition to SIL-1 include ATEX, IECEx, FM and FMc.
